Caravan FAQs

When purchasing a touring caravan, consider the following factors:

  • Budget: Account for the initial cost, insurance, maintenance, and storage expenses.

  • Choosing Your Retailer: Find your local Bailey Authorised Retailer via the Find a Retailer section to ensure convenient and reliable service.

  • Weight and Towing Capacity: To verify that your vehicle can safely tow the caravan. speak to your Retailer, use Towsafe’s matching service or use the Caravan and Motorhome Club or Camping and Caravanning Club’s matching software if you are a member of either club.

  • Size and Layout: Select a size that meets your needs, from a two-berth for couples to a six-berth for families. Ensure the layout provides comfortable sleeping, a practical kitchen and lounge, and bathroom facilities that work for you.

  • Quality and Construction: When choosing a Bailey, you can benefit from our unique Alu-Tech bodyshell construction. Find out more.

  • Features: Prioritize the features most important to your style of caravan holiday. These might be heating options, fridge size or bathroom layout to give some examples. Visit your local Retailer to see caravans you are interested in in person.

These considerations will help you find the ideal caravan for enjoyable travels.

When choosing the right caravan for sale, it’s helpful to consider:

  • Regular Travel Companions: Think about the number of people you’ll be taking away regularly, plus any extra guests you’d like to accommodate. This will help determine how many berths you’ll need.

  • Packing and Storage Needs: Consider the equipment you’ll want to bring along, as well as the essentials like clothing, toys, and books.

  • Additional Space Options: An awning could be a great choice if you’d like extra room for storage or a comfortable spot for additional guests to sleep.

By keeping these in mind, you’ll find a caravan that suits all your adventures perfectly.

If you choose to store your caravan over the winter you’ll need to consider the time and space needed to care for it during the winter months. You can store it on your driveway if you have enough space, or there are dedicated storage yards where you can rent space when you’re not using it – this is an all year round option as well if you don’t have access to a driveway.

Over the winter you’ll want to visit the caravan regularly to check everything is ok and there is no maintenance required. When preparing the caravan to go into storage over winter, see this blog post on winterisation for the steps you’ll need to take to get your caravan ready.

If you choose not to store your caravan over the winter and continue to use it, Bailey leisure vehicles will keep you warm and comfortable whatever the season. Tested to Grade III classification for heating and thermal insulation, all our products are suitable for year round touring.

Find out more about our cold chamber testing. And read about how we’ve tested our products to the limits on our Bailey Big Adventures.

Different cars can tow different caravans, and some will be too light to tow at all.

There are several ways to find out what your car can tow including the following:

  • You can ask a Caravan Retailer to check this for you

  • You can use Towsafe, which is the original car and caravan matching service online

  • You can use the matching service provided by the two clubs – The Caravan & Motorhome Club and the Camping & Caravanning Club – when you join them.

You may need to consider changing your car to accommodate the caravan that you want to tow. Alternatively, consider the weight of the caravan you’re looking to purchase and go for a more lightweight caravan option.

The nose weight is the weight or downward force from the caravan’s hitch to the car’s tow bar and ball.

You can find out everything you want to know about noseweight in our beginner’s guides here.

In the UK, caravans themselves do not require road tax (Vehicle Excise Duty) as they are considered trailers rather than motor vehicles. However, the vehicle towing the caravan must be appropriately taxed, insured, and comply with legal requirements for towing.

A hitchlock is a lock that fits on the hitch to help secure your caravan when it is parked up. PRIMA offer a selection of hitchlocks here

When towing you must have an adequate view of the road behind you. You will need to fit suitable towing mirrors if your trailer or caravan is wider than the rear of your car.

You can be fined up to £1,000 and get 3 penalty points for towing without proper towing mirrors.
More information on towing mirrors and towing with a car is available on gov.uk here

You can find towing mirrors at PRIMA Leisure – the home of Bailey Parts & Accessories.

In the UK, what you can tow depends on when you passed your driving test and the type of vehicle you have:

Passed before 1 January 1997: You can usually drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8,250 kg Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM). You are also allowed to drive a minibus with a trailer over 750kg MAM.

Passed after 1 January 1997: You can tow a trailer that weighs up to 3,500kg MAM known as a category BE vehicle.

Always check your driving license for any restrictions and ensure your vehicle is suitable for towing.

The rules can be detailed, so it’s wise to consult the UK government’s guidelines for specific scenarios or if you’re unsure about your entitlements.

It is illegal at all times to travel in a towed caravan. All passengers and pets should travel in the car.

You are not required by law to have caravan cover or caravan insurance in the UK, but you can buy products that will protect your investment from theft or damage.

You can find caravan cover or insurance by searching online. You can also buy Caravan Cover from the Caravan & Motorhome Club or Club Care caravan insurance from the Camping and Caravanning Club.

There are different speed limits when towing a caravan depending on the road you are on:

  • 30mph in a built-up area
  • 50mph on a single carriageway
  • 60mph on a dual carriageway or motorway
