What is a motorhome garage?
A motorhome garage is a large storage space within your vehicle that you can access from outside. This outside access means a garage is great for storing any items that you wouldn’t want to bring inside, for example, muddy or wet outdoor wear, bicycles, or even a snowboard.
An exterior storage locker is another type of storage that can be accessed from the outside of the motorhome and can be used to store outdoors equipment, although not items as large as bikes or paddleboards.
Here’s a breakdown of both garages and exterior storage lockers:
Group 1: Motorhome garages
These garages are large enough to store bicycles and ski equipment alongside outdoor gear and other items. Typically, they run along the entire end of the motorhome, giving you access to the garage from a door on either side of the vehicle.
The Bailey Adamo 69-4 is a great example of a large motorhome garage. Running alongside the entire rear end of the vehicle, on one side, you often have a large, tall door perfect for rolling bicycles into the storage space. On the other side, you have a smaller, wider door that you can use to access smaller items, such as outdoor gear.
Garages often have carpeted sidewalls, a vinyl floor, blown air heating outlet and lighting installed. They can also have floor mounted lashing rings which can be used for securing equipment or as the garage is heated, make a good place to secure your dog so they have their own kennel within the motorhome when you are pitched.
Group 2: Exterior access storage lockers
Where there is not space for a full motorhome garage, there is often an exterior access storage locker. These lockers don’t have the same features as a garage – for example they are not heated and don’t have lashing rings – but they can be used for larger items like outdoor furniture, parasols, or leisure equipment.
What features does a motorhome garage typically have?
If the Bailey motorhome you are looking at has a garage or exterior access storage locker, here are some of the features to look out for:
- Easy access: Exterior access doors on either side of the vehicle
- Durability: Fully lined storage space with carpeted sidewalls and a durable vinyl floor
- Heating: Blown air heating outlet – ideal for helping to dry wet outdoor gear more quickly
- Power: 230v and 12v power socket
- Lighting: Internal 12v strip light
- Mounts: Up to four floor-mounted lashing rings
- Gas access: Easy access to the gas bottle locker from inside the garage (certain Alora models only)
Are there any other considerations to be aware of?
Many motorhome owners like to use their motorhome garage to take heavier or bulkier things with them on holiday. While the garage makes this easy, you should consider payload. Bear in mind that every motorhome has a maximum payload. This is the amount of weight that you can carry in the vehicle in terms of things like leisure equipment, pots and pans, clothing – anything that you want to take with you. The Bailey motorhome payloads currently range from 340kg – 673kg depending on the model.
Why choose a motorhome with garage storage?
Use the links below to jump to sections in this article that explain several different reasons why a motorhome with a garage can enhance your holiday experience.
- Indulge in outdoor hobbies with a bit of luxury
- Easily take the bikes away
- Upgrade your beach experience
- More entertainment for the whole family
- Adventures you’ve never thought of
1. Indulge in outdoor hobbies with a bit of luxury
A motorhome with garage storage is perfect for those who enjoy outdoor hobbies like hiking, cycling, or watersports.
Many of the models in the Adamo and Alora ranges have an externally accessible garage space that includes floor-mounted lashing rings to secure your kit, heating to help everything get dry after a day out, plus 12v and 230v power outlets.
With an onboard kitchen, washroom, and warm bed waiting inside at the end of a day exploring, you can look forward to a good night’s sleep and leisurely breakfast in bed the next morning. Then, if you are planning to travel with all your kit in your self-contained vehicle to your next location, you can do it all again!

2. Easily take the bikes away
The Adamo 69-4, in particular, is great for transporting your bikes as it has a generously sized garage. This model also allows you to access the garage from the inside of the motorhome through a sliding door in the bathroom, which is handy if you want to remove things stored in your panniers or other bags once the bike has been loaded onto the motorhome.
As the shower is right next to the sliding door, you can also pull through any muddy shoes or kit you might want to wash off in the bathroom before returning them to the garage to dry off in this heated space.
And there is more you can pack into your motorhome than just bikes. Marcus Leach has been living in a Bailey motorhome with his family for the last two years. Read his Advice from Adventurers article which includes links off to other blog posts on how Marcus and his wife Kim have used their motorhome to travel the world while homeschooling their children on the road.

3. Upgrade your beach experience
While a beach break comes with many upsides – the relaxation, beautiful scenery, and fantastic food, there is also plenty of kit that might need to come along with you – especially if you have children.
With the Adamo and Alora, families, surfers, and other beachgoers alike can carry all the essentials that they might need in the garage of their motorhome. Buckets and spades, paddleboards, surfboards, windbreaks, wetsuits, life jackets… the list of kit can be endless, but you can store it all in the Adamo or Alora rear garage.
With a garage that is accessible from the outside, you can prevent sand and seawater from entering the inside of your motorhome and making a mess. When you’re finished for the day, you can use the onboard washroom and shower to clean up before having a hot drink and a bite to eat in your motorhome kitchen. It’s certainly an upgrade from drinking a flask of coffee while wrapped in a beach towel in the back of the car!
Your four-legged friend can even make use of a garage. There’s an external dog lashing point just outside the garage so you can keep your dog safe close to the motorhome, and they can even relax in the garage space if they want to spend some time under cover.

4. More entertainment for the whole family
Motorhome holidays are ever popular with families with young children because campsites offer them a chance to play safely and get in touch with nature. However, one of the issues can be the kids always wanting that ‘one extra’ toy that couldn’t quite fit in the vehicle and had to be left at home.
A motorhome with garage storage helps address this issue, as it has plenty of space to fit extra toys and bulkier items like scooters, bicycles, and paddleboards. The possibilities for outdoor entertainment are nearly endless, as will be the number of hours your kids are kept occupied.
Bailey motorhomes don’t stop at the garage storage when it comes to entertainment options. Both the Adamo and Alora motorhome ranges have a Status 570 telescopic directional digital television aerial, space for up to two TV stations with 230v, 12v and aerial sockets, a wall mounted TV bracket, and is pre-wired for an optional roof mounted Avtex mobile wi-fi system. This means that everyone in the family is able to stay connected while on the road.

5. Adventures you’ve never thought of
Perhaps the best thing about a motorhome with a rear garage is the number of possibilities it opens you up to. Inflatable kayaks, skis, bows, and arrows for archery, as well as many more items, can all be stowed in the external locker, and all can be used within easy reach of campsites across the UK. And if you want to go further afield, our motorhomes have been used from the cold of the Arctic and Dolomites to the heat of the Sahara and Australian Outback. You can find out more about the places our motorhomes have been to in our Bailey Big Adventure section.
Perhaps the best thing about having a garage is the access to new hobbies you haven’t even thought of yet.
