Touring with the Pegasus Grande Palermo: our first time out - part two

Woken early by the sound of the rain on the caravan roof. Fortunately, the rain did not stick around for long, so we headed off into Tenby to get the 11am Seal Safari from Tenby Harbour.

Luckily, the sun came out, brightening up the colourful seaside shops and we were soon on the boat heading for Caldey Island. After an enjoyable, yet windy journey across the sea, we arrived at the hidden bays on the Atlantic side of Caldey Island. Here, we were excited to see many female, grey seals, though the males were no-where to be seen, presumed to have gone fishing!

As we ventured further around the Island, we were able to see colonies of Razorbill sea birds that were nesting on the side of the steep, limestone cliffs. In addition, we saw some Oystercatchers distinguished by their bright red beak and pinkish red legs. Annually, Puffins also come to nest on the limestone cliffs of Caldey Island, however we were not lucky enough to see any on our trip. Once back on dry land, it was time for lunch, so we had fish, chips and ice cream looking out over Tenby beach.

Once again we woke up to the rain hammering down on the caravan roof but today it looked set to stay. Therefore, we took the opportunity to stay in the caravan and enjoy spending time together whilst getting to know our new Pegasus Grande.

Throughout the day, we discovered a metal heat protector plate under the knobs of the oven (to stop them getting warm), a dustpan and brush inside the bin lid and locks on the roof light at the front of the Caravan! A day well spent I would say! After playing some games as a family, we decided to make the most of the pool and went for another swim. Once again, we were the only family in the pool.

The next morning, the weather was looking a little brighter, so we took the opportunity to explore the Pembrokeshire coastline. Firstly, we headed into St Davids (the UK’s smallest city in terms of population) where we enjoyed meandering around the quaint little shops, picking up trinkets and gifts to remind us of our time in Wales.

Later we drove to Porth Clais Harbour where we parked on the National Trust carpark before embarking upon a tour of St Davids Peninsula. The wind in our hair and the waves crashing wildly against the rocks, the views were incredible. A few photo opportunities later, we strolled back to the car where we were treated to a Robin landing on the wing mirror of the car and looking into the open window.

Making the most of our National Trust membership, we drove on to Barafundle Bay, a place I often visited as a child. Once there, we parked up and walked along the cliff tops to the beach. Luckily, for me, I had Bruno to pull me up the plentiful, steep steps! Arriving on the beach, it was just as I had remembered – golden sands, undulating sand dunes, all surrounded by rocky cliffs. Before long, the girls had their shoes off and were paddling in the sea, running in and out of the waves and screaming loudly as the cool seawater rushed back over their toes. Bruno too had found a friend and spent much of his time chasing a little, black spaniel around the beach, covering himself in sand once more.

Another Travel day, we packed up the Palermo and headed to our final destination for this tour. Arriving in Newport at Tredegar House Caravan and Motorhome Club site, we wished we had longer to explore this beautiful estate. After setting up the Pegasus Grande, Andy, Bruno and the girls went to inspect the extensive parklands whilst I cooked dinner. Soon after, we headed to Cardiff to meet up with friends that we had met through caravanning only the summer before. It was lovely to catch up with our friends and we made a plan to cram in as much as possible into the next day.

After a goodnight sleep we woke up refreshed and ready for the day. A quick breakfast and we were back in the car making our way to meet with our friends Nick and Jan for our tour around the sights of Cardiff. The day started blustery and proved a little too chilly for us to be out of the car for too long but allowed us to take in the Penarth Marina, Penarth Pier and Cardiff Bay Barrage before finally exploring St Fagan’s Natural Museum of History, where the weather calmed a little and sun came out. A busy but very enjoyable day.

Our pack down process is now well drilled and before we knew it, we were joining the M4 for the trip back home. The quiet drive home brought to the end a successful and thoroughly enjoyable first trip away in our new Caravan; we are delighted that we chose the Bailey Pegasus Palermo. The wide, side dinette and rear bunks is a perfect layout for our growing family and we are looking forward to our next adventure.
