A campervan is a compact, versatile leisure vehicle often based on a van. The smaller footprint of a van conversion is incredibly appealing for many reasons, from those looking to purchase their first leisure vehicle and wanting something car-like to drive to those who’d like to access remote destinations that might be off-limits to larger vehicles.
This compact design perfectly complements the great outdoors, as depending on the layout chosen, a side-loading door and/or twin rear doors allow you to admire the view from the bed, lounge, or kitchen.
During a camping trip, you can easily set up camp in a picturesque spot, enjoying the simplicity campervans bring. Their size allows you to park in tighter spaces, giving you flexibility when choosing campsites. Supermarket car parks are also easy to access, ensuring you arrive at the campsite with bread, milk, and other essentials.
Some campervans may have limited home comforts, but Bailey’s Endeavour range is equipped with Truma heating and hot water, full kitchen facilities, a washroom with a shower, and the all-important loo. Testing its four-season touring credentials, I spent a long weekend in the Italian Dolomites, where temperatures dropped as low as -20°C. I’m pleased to report that the Bailey Endeavour easily shrugged off these temperatures.
A motorhome is commonly regarded as a spacious and fully equipped recreational vehicle, perfect for those who love long-term travel with all the comforts of home. Unlike campervans, some motorhome layouts offer separate living, sleeping, and kitchen areas, providing ample room for relaxation and entertainment. Whether embarking on a cross-country journey or planning an extended holiday, a motorhome can provide the luxury and comfort you desire.
However, a compact motorhome is worth considering if you want the luxury of a larger vehicle with the footprint of a campervan.
During the Dolomites trip, we were joined by a Bailey Alora motorhome, a narrow-bodied leisure vehicle 7 metres long. As with most campervans, the Alora motorhome range doesn’t require a C1 driving license category; the entire range can be driven on a standard ‘B’ license.
Should you travel as a family, enjoy longer trips, or carry additional equipment such as surfboards, bicycles, larger BBQs, etc., motorhome layout options may be worth considering. A compact motorhome’s slimline body makes it as easy to park in a supermarket car park as a larger campervan. We have repeatedly proven this, from Sainsbury’s in Bristol to various Carrefour supermarkets across the English Channel. The same applies to fuel station fill-ups.
Size and space are factors to consider when choosing between a campervan and a motorhome. Many campervans offer a smaller footprint, making it easier to park in tight spaces and more agile on narrow roads. This can be an advantage if you plan to explore rural areas or visit bustling cities where parking is at a premium.
However, a campervan’s compact size can limit interior space and storage options, although this is unlikely to be an issue if you’re travelling alone or as a couple. Several motorhome versus campervan guides suggest that campervans are best suited to short trips, although I’ve seen English-registered campervans in most places, so this isn’t necessarily the case. The most important thing is to purchase the leisure vehicle that perfectly suits your needs.
Motorhomes tend to provide more living space. Separate living, sleeping, and kitchen areas allow for a comfortable and organised travel experience. If you plan to explore remote destinations at the end of narrower roads, a compact motorhome such as the Bailey Alora may be worth considering.

The amenities you need depend on the duration and style of your trips. If you’re planning a short adventure and prefer to spend most of your time outdoors, a campervan has traditionally been considered the ideal choice. For longer trips or if you enjoy cooking and spending time indoors, a motorhome is often regarded as a winner. However, a compact motorhome bridges this gap and can deliver the best of both worlds.
Campervans, such as the Bailey Endeavour, offer clever design elements that maximise space. From pop-up roofs to space-saving doors, these features enhance the functionality of campervans without compromising on comfort. This makes them a popular choice for those who appreciate innovative design and efficiency in their travel vehicles.
When considering amenities and features, consider how you plan to use your vehicle and your desired comfort level.
Driving a campervan often feels more like piloting a traditional car, thanks to their nimble handling and ease of manoeuvrability. This makes campervans an excellent choice for those not accustomed to driving large vehicles. Their compact size allows for greater agility on narrow roads and urban environments, making parking and tight turns a breeze.
A large motorhome may require more route planning, but using an Avtex satellite navigation system that allows you to input weight, length, height, etc., helps enormously. However, the increased space can make extended tours more comfortable.
Motorhomes and campervans over 3500kg require a C1 driving license. If you passed your driving test before 1st January 1997, you likely have this category included already. If you passed your test after 1st January 1997, you’ll likely need to take a separate test. C1 entitlement is shown on the back of a photocard driving license.
Choosing between a campervan and a motorhome for your next adventure depends on your individual preferences, travel style, and budget. Campervans offer flexibility and ease of access to remote locations and can even be used as daily drivers. Motorhomes provide luxury and space, perfect for extended journeys and relaxed travel experiences.
However, a compact motorhome may be the perfect choice if you can’t decide between a motorhome and a campervan.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the advantages of a campervan?
Campervans are typically smaller than many leisure vehicles, which makes them the perfect choice for exploring sites and destinations away from major routes. They can also be more car-like to drive.
What are the advantages of a motorhome?
Motorhomes tend to be larger than campervans, making them more comfortable for extended trips or family holidays. Depending on the layout chosen, the living quarters and sleeping areas may be divided into sections, or the kitchen/washroom may be larger. Certain motorhomes have a garage that can accommodate bulkier items.
What is the difference between a campervan and a motorhome?
Campervans are typically built on a van platform, hence the term ‘van conversion’. Motorhomes are typically bigger and likely have a coach-built body on a van chassis or similar. Campervans are typically smaller, and motorhomes are larger.
What is a compact motorhome?
Using the Bailey Alora as an example, this compact motorhome has a slimline body and a length of 7 metres. This makes it nimbler than a larger motorhome while providing the levels of comfort you’d expect.
Can I go wild camping in a campervan or motorhome in Scotland?
Wild camping is permitted in many areas but is prohibited at certain spots. It’s essential to do your homework beforehand and always respect the land.
