With the end of the summer holidays fast approaching, get out there and make the most of the activities on offer.
Whether you’re looking for an action packed break exploring the Jurassic Coast in Dorset, or a great family day out at a City Farm, our list of activities to entertain the kids has it all.

 

Take on the Red Squirrel Trail

The Red Squirrel Trail takes in estuaries, woodland and farmland through the heart of the Isle of Wight’s stunning countryside. With 23 miles of mostly traffic-free cycling, you can easily cycle a shorter section for a great family day out.

The route is named the Red Squirrel Trail in celebration of the Isle of Wight’s most heralded species, the native Red Squirrel. With the shorter routes taking cycle trails from Ryde to St Helens and Yarmouth to Freshwater, there are plenty of places to hire bikes should you need to.

With a number of campsites throughout the Isle of Wight, The Orchards Holiday Park, Practical Caravan’s best site for families in their Top 100 Sites Guide, lies in Yarmouth and is ideally situated for any families looking to try the Red Squirrel Trail.

Visit a City Farm in Bristol

While a stay Baltic Wharf Caravan and Motorhome club site near the city’s harbour side is a must, a visit to one of Bristol’s city farms is sure to keep the whole family entertained.

Take some time to stroll through St Werburghs City Farm and their community gardens or take in the activities on offer at Windmill Hill City Farm, such as making friends with their farmyard animals.

Take the kids to The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre

Based in the village where Roald Dahl lived and wrote for 36 years, the museum features three interactive galleries and is ideal for 6 to 12 year-olds. Enjoy free drop-in crafts every day and free storytelling at weekends and during the school holidays.

Make the most of the Buckinghamshire countryside with a stay in the Chiltern Hills at Corner Farm Camping and Caravan Site, on the edge of the pretty hamlet of Kings Ash, near Wendover.

Fossil hunting on the Jurassic Coast

Home to an amazing fossil collection, the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre is where you can learn how to look for your own fossils on the beach. The Heritage Centre also offers guided fossil tours along the Jurassic Coast in Dorset, a great introduction in helping you to identify the fossils you’ll find.

Take a family woodland walk

The sheltered lower eastern slopes of Great Mell Fell are covered by mixed woods of oak, rowan, birch, holly and scots pine and this National Trust wood in Cumbria is perfect for a family woodland walk.

Just a couple of miles away from this beautiful woodland is another of Practical Caravan’s Top 100 SitesThe Quiet Site, a serene campsite, perfectly situated for you to explore Great Mell Fell and the Lake District.

Cycle the High Peak Trail in Derbyshire

The High Peak Trail is a 17.5 mile trail from High Peak Junction, near Cromford to Dowlow near Buxton. Follow the route of the former Cromford and High Peak Railway through Middleton and Parsley Hay, stopping at the picnic tables along the route.

With The Ashbourne and Bakewell Camping and Caravanning Club sites nearby, cycling the High Peak Trail may be perfect for some family time in the great outdoors.

Watch the wildlife at the heart of the Dearne Valley

Old Moor in the Dearne Valley is a wonderful place to watch the wildlife, taking in the skies, fields and open water that are swarming with birds.

There are lots of events, guided walks and family activities, making this nature reserve a great day out for young and old alike.

Located just a few miles from Dearne Valley, Nostell Priory Holiday Park is the perfect base to explore Old Moor from, providing a relaxing environment for all the family.

Take a walk on the wild side

Discover your wild side at West Midland Safari and Leisure Park and get up close and personal with Giraffe’s, Rhino’s and Zebra’s.
