How to hitch up your caravan in easy-to-follow steps

With an array of levers and cables, hitching a caravan to a car may seem tricky, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Following the correct procedure makes it incredibly easy, and before you know it, you’ll have coupled car and caravan ready for your holiday.

Step by step guide to hitching up

To hitch up, start by making sure the caravan’s handbrake is on, the corner steadies are raised, and the height of the caravan’s hitch is higher than the tow ball on your car. Then follow these simple step-by-step instructions.

Position the tow ball under the caravan hitch

1. Reverse the car until the tow ball is underneath the caravan’s hitch. A motor-mover can make final adjustments easier, especially if you’re doing this alone.

Attach the breakaway cable

2. Attach the breakaway cable. If your tow bar has an eyelet as a breakaway cable attachment point, loop the cable through this eyelet before clipping it back on itself.

Lower the hitch onto the tow ball

3. Raise the stabiliser and hitch levers and lower the hitch onto the tow ball by winding the jockey wheel up so the front of the caravan goes down.

4. Keep winding the jockey wheel until the hitch fits over the tow ball, the smaller (hitch) lever clicks downwards, and the visual indicator pops out, showing green. To double-check that the hitch is located correctly, wind the jockey wheel back down until the rear of your tow car lifts an inch or two.

5. Wind the jockey wheel all the way up, making sure the ‘forks’ locate in their slots. Undo the jockey wheel clamp, lift, and secure out of the way.

Check the indicator is showing green

6. If you have a stabiliser hitch, push down the stabiliser arm and check that its visual indicator is also showing green.

Attach the connector(s)

7. Attach the connector or connectors for the lights etc. If the cable is too long, putting a twist in it will keep it from dragging on the road.

8. Is your caravan equipped with an ATC device? If so, ensure that the green ATC light is illuminated. This can be found on top of the A-frame. If the light is red, unplug the caravan from the car, wait a few seconds, and reconnect. If the green light comes on, everything is fine. If the red light remains illuminated, contact your retailer or service agent.

Attach the towing mirrors

9. Attach towing mirrors to your tow vehicle. Adjust, so the inner third of the mirror shows your tow vehicle with the remainder showing your caravan and the road behind.

Making sure that your car’s handbrake is on, release the caravan handbrake and the motor-mover if you have one. Check that the caravan lights are working and that doors, windows and roof lights are closed. Make any final adjustments to the towing mirrors and you’re ready to go!

Step by step guide to unhitching

Before unhitching your caravan, make sure your car handbrake is on.

  1. Apply the caravan’s handbrake. Chock the wheels if necessary.
  2. Unplug the socket or sockets.
  3. Unclamp the jockey wheel, drop it down and retighten.
  4. Disengage the stabiliser hitch by pulling upwards.
  5. Wind down the jockey wheel while lifting the coupling lever. The hitch should then lift from the car’s tow ball.
  6. Unclip the breakaway cable.
