Arriving on site: How to level your caravan
You've checked in at reception and manoeuvred your caravan onto the pitch, but what's next? Levelling a caravan makes for a comfortable holiday, allows the sinks and shower to drain properly, and helps the appliances to function correctly. Here's how to deal with uneven ground.
Levelling without a motor mover
- If your caravan doesn’t have a motor mover, it’s worth checking to see if your caravan is level across its width (along the axle) before unhitching your car.
- Place a spirit level on the floor (or flat surface such as a worktop) with the ends of the level pointing towards the sides of the caravan.
- If the caravan needs raising on one side, place a caravan levelling ramp under the wheel and pull the caravan up the ramp until perfectly level.
- With the caravan level, check that AL-KO axle wheel locks (if used) can be fitted, as this may require slight forwards/backwards adjustments.
- If your caravan levelling ramp comes with a wheel chock, place it under the wheel.
- With the caravan level across its width, the wheel positioned to accept a wheel lock, and the caravan’s handbrake on, the car can be unhitched and moved out of the way. A guide to unhitching can be found at the bottom of this page.
- Next, we level the caravan along its length. Turn the spirit level through 90 degrees so that it points towards either end of the caravan.
- Raise or lower the front of the caravan with the jockey wheel until level.
- With the caravan level, wind down each corner steady until firm.
- It’s a good idea to lower the corner steadies onto corner steady pads or wooden blocks to prevent them from sinking into soft ground.

To unhitch car and caravan
- Apply the caravan’s handbrake. Chock the wheels if necessary.
- Unplug the socket or sockets.
- Unclamp the jockey wheel, drop it down and retighten.
- Disengage the stabiliser hitch and wind down the jockey wheel whilst lifting the coupling lever. The coupling should then lift from the car’s tow ball.
- Unclip the breakaway cable.
