Philp and Sheila George’s Alora 69-4I

14th January 2025 | Bailey of Bristol
Philip and Sheila George’s decision to upgrade their motorhome wasn’t one they made overnight. After years of enjoying their 2008 motorhome, it became clear that the vehicle needed constant work to keep running. In October 2023, at the NEC Motorhome and Caravan Show, the couple found a motorhome that ticked all the right boxes: the Bailey Alora.

Finding the perfect motorhome

While at the event, Philip and Sheila were immediately drawn to the Bailey Alora. Its modern design, compact width, and practical features, such as diesel heating and Grade 3 insulation, made it a strong contender. With three layout options available, the couple initially favoured the Alora 69-4T layout. However, as they learned more, their preferences evolved.

What solidified their interest was watching the MMM review of the Alora on YouTube, presented by Peter Vaughan. The review confirmed what they already felt – the Alora had the practical design and modern functionality they wanted for their travels.

Research

The couple spent the following year researching and visiting Bailey Approved Retailers and events across the UK, comparing the Alora to other models. While they considered alternatives, although they kept returning to the Alora. Its combination of style, comfort, and affordability made it the best fit for their needs.

Customisation

In late 2024, an inheritance allowed Philip and Sheila to finally purchase the motorhome they had been eyeing for a year. They chose the Alora 69-4i layout and worked closely with Elite Motorhomes in Banbury to make the vehicle uniquely theirs. Despite the dealership being a two-hour drive from their home, they were impressed with the team’s attention to detail.

The couple’s extensive list of modifications included:

  • Air-ride Suspension
  • Increase Weight Capacity
  • Washroom Vent Kit
  • Avtex WiFi
  • Microwave
  • Waste Kit
  • 4m Awning
  • 360-degree camera system

In addition, they also plan to install levelling jacks. These upgrades ensure the Alora is perfectly suited to their needs and lifestyle.

Touring and the Bailey Owners’ Club (BOC)

Philip and Sheila’s initial interest in touring began in the 1990s with an amusing and humble beginning – trading a porta potty for an old caravan. ‘A long story,’ Philip stated, but it sparked a hobby that’s lasted decades. Over the years, they upgraded to newer models, including a Bailey caravan in the late 1980s, before transitioning to motorhomes. Now, with the Bailey Alora, they feel they’ve come full circle.

The couple rejoined the BOC in 2024, just before collecting their Alora. Although they have yet to attend any rallies or events, they’ve already connected with other owners through the BOC and the ‘Bailey Alora UK Owners’ Facebook group. These communities have been invaluable for sharing advice and tips, particularly for new owners.

Membership in the BOC also brings appealing benefits, with Philip and Sheila using the BOC discounts to purchase accessories like wind deflectors, mirror guards, and headlight covers from Prima Leisure.

One of their favourite destinations is Setthorns in the New Forest, a site they’ve visited on and off for over 20 years.

Its tranquil surroundings, abundant wildlife, and simple facilities make it the perfect spot for their hobbies, including cycling, photography, and geocaching. Here’s a look at a Philip’s experimental 360° photography.

For Philip and Sheila, the Bailey Alora isn’t just a motorhome – it’s a new chapter in a lifelong love of travel and a home wherever they park it. With its thoughtful design and compact build, the Alora is perfectly equipped to take them wherever they dream of going.

Looking ahead, Philip and Sheila plan to visit one site per month during the winter, attend local rallies, and embark on a trip to Germany’s Black Forest. Once Sheila retires, the couple has even bigger ambitions, exploring the fjords of Norway, Greece, and everywhere in between – and of course, Bailey Bear will be joining every step of the way!
