Arriving on site: Campervan gas system
In this guide, we’ll show you how to use the gas system in your campervan, including how to change the gas bottle. For many Bailey campervan models, the gas bottle is located in a dedicated storage compartment within the kitchen unit. The hob and cooker both use gas.
Turning on the gas and using the hob, grill, or cooker
- Locate the gas bottle and ensure the hose has been connected.
- Turn on the gas by turning the valve (on top of the gas bottle) in an anticlockwise direction. A few turns are usually sufficient.
- Turn the hob, grill, or cooker knob. Press and hold.
- Light the gas by pressing the igniter button. Continue to press the knob for a few seconds.
For many Bailey campervan models, the gas bottle is located in a dedicated storage compartment within the kitchen unit.
Types of campervan gas
- All gas appliances fitted to your Bailey campervan can be used with butane or propane without adjustment.
- If you’re using Calor gas, butane is supplied in blue bottles and is suitable for use at temperatures as low as 2°
- Calor Propane is supplied in red bottles and will work at temperatures as low as -40° It’s an excellent gas for winter caravanning as well as year-round use.
- You can buy suitable gas bottles from your local leisure vehicle retailer, garage, campsite, or DIY outlet. A list of Calor stockists can be found at calor.co.uk
- Consult your owner’s manual to find which size bottle will fit your campervan. 6kg propane or 7kg butane is a popular choice.
How to change a gas cylinder in your campervan
- Ensure the cylinder is empty and that all gas appliances are turned off.
- Turn off the cylinder valve (at the top of the bottle).
- Remove the gas hose from the cylinder. This thread is left-handed, meaning that it unscrews clockwise.
- Release the retaining strap and remove the empty cylinder from the gas locker.
- Before placing the new cylinder in the cradle, ensure the tray is clean and debris-free.
- Place the new cylinder in the cradle and tighten the retaining strap.
- Remove the plastic protector from the cylinder’s valve outlet.
- Connect the gas hose and tighten anticlockwise until snug.
- Turn on the cylinder valve.
- Your gas appliances are ready to use.
What to do before travelling and what to do once you arrive on site
Before moving your campervan, ensure the heating and cooking appliances are off and the gas cylinder’s valve is closed.
