UK Government announces new rules for drivers towing a caravan

20th September 2021 | Bailey of Bristol
The government has announced significant changes to the rules for drivers towing a trailer which in future will give younger drivers access to a much wider choice of caravans.

As it stands currently what you are allowed to tow depends on when you passed your driving test. However the new rules, due to be implemented later this year, mean that anyone who passed their test after 1 January 1997 will now be able to tow a trailer that is up to 3,500kg maximum authorised mass (or maximum technical permitted laden mass as it applies to caravans) without taking an additional test.

This change brings the towing weight limits for this group of drivers’ in-line with those people who passed their driving test before this date. The current additional B+E driving test will therefore be scrapped.

Full details on these new rules can be found on the following link on the Government web site:

Please note that these rules only apply if you live in England, Scotland or Wales. Different guidelines are in place in Northern Ireland

Drivers will still need to follow the current rules until the new laws come into effect later this year (date to be confirmed). Breaking the present law and trying to tow something heavier beforehand could lead to a fine of up to £1,000, up to 6 points on your licence and even a driving ban.

People who are looking to start driving a car and trailer are also being encouraged to undergo lessons with a driving instructor.

The National Standard for Driving Cars and Light Vans offers advice on the skills and understanding required to tow a caravan, while both The Caravan and Motorhome Club and The Camping and Caravanning Club also offer a range of courses.

Existing caravanning general guidelines also recommend that the laden weight of the caravan does not exceed 85 per cent of the unladen weight of the car. Although this is not a requirement by law, this recommendation is designed to help improve stability when towing a caravan.
