Testing to the limitsBailey Motorhome FAQs
When buying a motorhome you need to think about budget, the size of vehicle you are comfortable driving, the kind of holidays you’d like to do and places you’d like to visit, and who will be going along with you – including family and pets – so you can be sure there is enough space and beds available for everyone. Also consider if you would like a manual or an automatic.
It’s also a good idea in your initial research to think about the kind of layout you would like so that the motorhome works well for you when you are living in it. This includes things like where you’d like to have the washroom, would you like fixed beds or a bed that drops from the ceiling, and what do you want the kitchen to be like – do you want a microwave for example and how big do you need the fridge to be.
For berths, think about the people that you will be bringing along with you – they will each need a place to sleep. And don’t forget to accommodate occasional guests. In terms of size, think about the size of motorhome you will be comfortable driving. The Alora for example is narrower than a standard motorhome so may be easier on narrow country roads. If you passed your test on or after the 1 st Jan 1997, you will also be restricted to a motorhome weighing 3500kg MTPLM or less.
You will also spend a lot of time on your motorhome on the road, so make sure the layout works for you and that there is enough room for everyone to spend time in the motorhome comfortably.
Your standard driving licence will cover you to drive a motorhome but there are some restrictions. If you passed your test on or after 1 st January 1997, you are usually limited to a motorhome weighing 3500kg or under. If you passed your test before this date then you can likely drive a heavier motorhome – check your licence in both cases for details.
You do need specific insurance to drive and cover your motorhome and it’s a legal requirement that it has this. Speak to your Retailer, check comparison sites online or speak to one of the clubs – The Caravan and Motorhome Club or the Camping and Caravanning Club for more information on finding the right insurance for you.
You can take your motorhome abroad but there are some things to consider first including insurance, where to stay, ferry travel and compulsory items you will need to carry on the roads in Europe. The Caravan and Motorhome Club have a good information page covering your first time abroad here
You have a couple of options with winter storage. You can either store the motorhome at your own home or you can use a storage yard. Your local Retailer may have details of one near you, or else you can search on the internet for something within driving distance. Remember not to choose a site too far from home as you’ll want to check in on the motorhome through the winter.
Alternatively you don’t need to pack everything away until the Spring. Bailey motorhomes are cold chamber tested to Grade III for thermal insulation and heating and its perfectly possible to continue using your motorhome all year round. Have a look at our Bailey Big Adventures where we’ve tested our vehicles in the sub-zero cold of the Arctic circle and the Dolomites and the heat of the Sahara Desert and the Australian Outback
PRIMA Leisure is the home of Bailey Parts & Accessories and you can find the parts and accessories you are looking for right here
Your motorhome will need regular servicing for both the cab and the habitation area. Speak to your Retailer to find out more and arrange this.
You can! All Bailey motorhome have EN-1646-1 Grade III classification for heating and thermal insulation for all-year round usage, confirmed by cold chamber testing. This means you’ll be warm year round. You can find out more about our cold chamber testing here
All our Bailey motorhomes are equipped with solar panels, water tanks and provision for gas bottles. This allows you to access water, charge the leisure battery and run your heating, fridge and oven without a hook-up.
There’s a little more planning involved in going off grid to ensure you have the right amount of water and gas and are able to keep your leisure battery topped up, but its certainly something that you are able to do in your Bailey leisure vehicle.
